Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Zero Emission Vehicles Strategy
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) developed a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Strategy as part of its broader commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The strategy aligned with the agency’s Net Zero Roadmap, published in September 2023, which outlined more than 40 concrete actions to reduce emissions across its operations and support the decarbonization efforts of its vast network of tenants and contractors. The ZEV Strategy provided guidance for transitioning PANYNJ’s fleet to zero-emission technologies and accelerating emissions reductions at bridges, tunnels, airports, and seaports.
As a subconsultant to AECOM and LION Advisors, Rhie Planning supported the ZEV Strategy by leading stakeholder engagement and analysis to ensure that the plan reflected the needs of those directly impacted. Additionally, Rhie Planning provided subject matter expertise on environmental justice, delivering a final environmental justice brief in February 2024. By embedding equity considerations into the agency’s approach to decarbonization, the strategy advanced PANYNJ’s efforts to meet its interim goal of reducing direct emissions by 50% by 2030 and contributed to a more sustainable and equitable future for the region.
